Today my husband brought me a box of frosted sugar cookies and I was reminded of what was the worst Valentine’s Day we’ve ever had. Thank goodness we can laugh about it now, 16 years later.
It was the year 2000. Johnny and I were living in Jonesboro, both students at Arkansas State University, just 19 and 20 years old (so, so young). We had been dating for three years at this point. Now, keep in mind, I’m a helpless romantic and my husband is not. It was now Valentine’s Day, our first one since I had moved to Jonesboro. I decided to go all out. I don’t remember exactly what I did but I know it had something to do with the reasons I loved him, balloons and candy bars. Therefore, I was expecting him to do something fun and surprising for me.
The SIMS game was just becoming popular and Johnny had recently gotten the game. He spent the entire day playing the game. I went to his apartment expecting a fun-filled Valentine’s Day and instead found him playing SIMS. I spent the entire day stomping around the apartment, huffing and puffing, doing anything to get his attention and let him know I was not happy. Finally, at some point late that night, he walked into the living room, threw a box of store bought frosted sugar cookies on the couch beside me and said “Happy Valentine’s Day”, then walked out of the room. To make it worse, I HATE THOSE FROSTED SUGAR COOKIES!
I wish I could remember, but I’m sure that “fight” didn’t last too long. We were engaged four months later, married by 2002 and now 16 years and 3 kids later I could not be happier. Now, almost every Valentine’s Day he brings me a box of those terrible sugar cookies and we have a good laugh.
