Day 7, Wednesday, June 24, 2026
Today was move day. We loaded up early and left Moab by around 8am. We didn’t have to move far, just 3 hours west to Torrey, UT where we are visiting Capitol Reef National Park.
We were ready to get out of Moab this morning. Moab has been great but the smoke from the fires blazing to the west was getting pretty extreme. We woke up this morning to ash that looked like snow sprinkled on everything we had left outside. We were afraid the smoke would continue to be worse as we actually were going to be moving closer to the fire. However, by the time we arrived at Capitol Reef we could see sunshine and by the afternoon there was no sign of smoke in the air.
We are now set up at Capitol Reef RV Glamping & Camping. It is a new RV park just outside of the park. We have stunning views of the red rocks on one side and a cattle field on the other. The only drawback is there is no shade and the wind blowing pretty hard this evening. Good news, its only been about 80 degrees all day. Wonderful weather, beautiful views.
We spent the afternoon going on a scenic drive through Capitol Reef NP. It’s nice to get a lay of the land before planning our full day tomorrow. We ended up on a dirt road between two bluffs and it was one of the neatest drives I’ve ever done. We called it a slot canyon for trucks. After we finished there we went into the Fruita District of the park and picked apricots. Yep, we’re in the middle of the dessert but Capitol Reef is this anomoly that has fresh water flowing through it and fertile farm land. There are fruit orchards through the park. The kids loved experiencing climbing ladders and using long fruit picking poles to harvest some apricots. We also had a bonus of seeing 3 deer bedded down literally a few yards from us in the orchard. They had zero concerns that we were close.
We wrapped up our night cooking fajitas and enjoying the sunset from our campground. Tomorrow we will have a chance to fully explore the park and get in a few short hikes.
